ADS-B Out – Automatic Dependant Surveillance-Broadcast

What is ADS-B?

ADS-B is a broadcasting system that does not require action from the pilot of the aircraft or any request from Air Traffic Control (ATC). The system enables aircraft to broadcast their identification position, altitude and velocity to other aircraft and to ATC. This is known as “ADS-B Out”. When an aircraft has the capabilities of receiving this information, it is known as “ADS-B In”.

What is the ADS-B Out Mandate?

As of 7th June 2020 (Europe), all aircraft that weigh in excess of 5700kg or have a max cruise speed greater than 250 knots, must be equipped with ADS-B capabilities in to order to continue being operational within European airspace.

As of 1st January 2020 (USA), both commercial aircraft flying in Class A, B and C airspace are required to be equipped with transponders which have the ADS-B out capability.

What equipment do you need?

Dependant on the age of the aircraft decides whether the equipment is simple or complex. However, you may be aware that you have some elements on the aircraft already.

Required:

  • Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS)
  • Upgraded Transponders
  • Capability to input flight ID
  • Software and hardware upgrades for data
